Why I built this

I wanted a private search to stay private — seen by no one, saved by no one.

Existing browsers offer "private tabs" and "clear history," but those are actions you have to remember every time. Forget once, and the trace remains. And there are areas no setting can cover — the person sitting next to you, the brief moment you hand your phone to family, the preview frame in the App Switcher.

Umbric is an iOS browser that makes "no trace, nothing shown" the default. It builds on Apple's own privacy machinery while actively responding to the physical situations where you can be seen.

How is this different from Safari Private Browsing?

Safari Private only avoids leaving history. Umbric adds active defenses on top: automatic camouflage on backgrounding, a Face ID-protected Private Mode, two-layer (network + DOM) ad and tracker blocking, fingerprinting countermeasures across Canvas / WebGL / AudioContext, and one-tap scoped wipe.

Am I really not being tracked?

Cookies, cache, and web storage are not persisted between sessions. Browsing history stays on-device only — never sent externally. Fingerprinting attempts are suppressed across multiple surfaces (Canvas, WebGL, AudioContext, Navigator).

What is background camouflage?

The moment you send the app to the background or open the App Switcher, the current page is automatically replaced by a decoy view. It's a first-line defense against shoulder surfing and brief device hand-offs.

How does Private Mode differ from the regular mode?

Private Mode is a completely separate browsing space, protected by Face ID. Tabs, history, and bookmarks are managed independently. You can also pair it with Focus Filters to switch in and out automatically based on the Focus you're in.

Is Free enough on its own?

All the core privacy machinery is in Free — non-persistent storage, background camouflage, Private Mode, two-layer ad and tracker blocking, fingerprinting countermeasures, auto-reject for cookie consent banners, and more. Pro adds a layer of "redrawing the line yourself" — active controls for users who want more.

Will auto-rejecting cookie consent break websites?

We target 14 major Consent Management Platforms (CMPs) and choose the minimum-consent option. In rare cases a site's feature may stop working — you can keep a per-site allowlist to disable auto-reject on specific sites.

All version updates, new features, and compatibility patches are free. Pro is a one-time purchase — no recurring charges, no subscription.

"Umbric" combines Umbra (Latin for shadow) with the idea of a deft, well-considered move. Sit beside you without taking up space, slip out of sight the moment a glance comes near — your privacy, kept by your own hand.
